Fund for Teachers AwardThree Crossroads Academy - Quality Hill teachers have been awarded the Fund for Teachers fellowship, allowing them to travel internationally for professional development. Ms. Griffiths (Third Grade), Ms. Liseo (Third Grade) and Ms. Zetmeir (Visual Arts) will travel to Spain this summer to pursue an immersive learning experience.

“We believe that through immersing ourselves in the culture, history and geography of Spain, we will further develop perspectives as non-native learners,” the teachers said. “This work will inform decisions we make as culturally-responsive educators in a diverse school environment, and will strengthen our teaching practices in fine arts, literacy, and social studies.”

The teachers will use this experience to develop a third grade cross-curricular unit of study. This unit will ask third graders to research their own heritage, explore the impact their cultures have on others, and share their learning through a heritage event. The goal of this unit is to help CAQH students become culturally literate in the historical context of their families and of their classmates. Ultimately, our hope is that our students will understand the importance and power of their influence as global citizens.

In order to facilitate students’ independent research, the third grade teachers will first guide them through a group experience of cultural immersion - specifically a Spanish immersion, informed by their trip abroad. This experience will also correspond with the students Spanish instruction, which they receive several times each week at Crossroads Academy - Quality Hill.

We can’t wait to watch our teachers implement their learning from this incredible opportunity!
